This course serves as a 3-hour, elective course for Communication Studies majors and minors but is open to all interested University students. For Communication Studies majors, it may serve as a course elective in Rhetorical Studies. No prerequisites are required, though course content is aimed at a level presumed to be above that of first-year students. It is a W course; thus, writing proficiency is required for passing. The general purpose of the course is to develop an understanding of the nature of social protest as it is revealed in the discourse it produces. The course also aims specifically to develop the ability to analyze the rhetorical dimensions of discourse and assess degrees of effectiveness, while gaining an awareness of how rhetorical acts function to change, as well as to control change, in society.
