Directed Study in Medieval Rhetoric -- COM 536

Course Objectives

The main objective of this course is to examine the development of rhetorical theory and practice in the Middle Ages and Early Renaissance (c. 400-1600) and to gain an understanding of how that development was related to the arts of grammar, logic, and poetic, as well as to the religious and cultural context out of which it arose. A secondary objective is to stimulate critical thought and research in this period of development in the history of rhetoric.

Requirements

Read and be prepared to discuss the required readings for the course, as well as completing the following:.

  • Be responsible for 3 reports on cognate materials as assigned. Typed abstracts of the materials must also be submitted in WebCT when the report is due.
  • Submit 2 short seminar essays (3-4 typed pages each) on course-related subjects.
  • Submit 1 scholarly paper (approx. 10-12 pages) by the end of the course. At least 1 rough draft of the paper must be turned in for critical assessment by the due date
