Arthur Benke

Department of Biological Sciences
University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, U.S.A.

Arthur Benke, professor of biological sciences and co-editor of Rivers of North America will speak about this book in Rodgers Library for Science and Engineering. Joining him in speaking will be two UA professors who each co-authored chapters of the book: G. Milton Ward and Alex Huryn, also in the Department of Biological Sciences.

Benke will speak about the book and about man's relationship to rivers. The book took approximately five years to produce and publish. It includes 22 chapters on major river basins written by regional specialists. Dr. Benke and the recently published book are featured in a November 14, 2005 cover article in the publication UA Dialog.

Arthur C. Benke holds a Ph. D. in Zoology from the University of Georgia. He was on the faculty of the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1971-1984. In 1984 he joined the Unversity of Alabama Department of Biological Sciences. His research includes ecology of freshwater insects and other invertebrates. He is interested in conservation and management of river ecosystems. He has taught courses in freshwater ecosystems, population and community ecology of aquatic animals, as well as other areas of ecology.

Also speaking:

G. Milton Ward is co-author of the chapter "Gulf Coast Rivers of the Southeastern United States", with UA faculty Phillip Harris and Amelia Ward. Milton Ward is associate professor, UA Department of Biological Sciences. His research activities involve study of the processes through which stream and wetland ecosystems acquire, store, process, and export dissolved and particulate organic matter.

Alex Huryn is co-author of the chapter "Atlantic Coast Rivers of the Northeastern United States." Alex Huryn is associate professor, UA Department of Biological Sciences. His research interests are aquatic entomology and stream ecology.

From reviews of Rivers of North America

"Grand in design and even grander in scope and execution, Rivers of North America will shape our collective thinking about North American rivers and watersheds. Here is an indispensable guide to the geography, ecology, and status, including pressures from human actions, of rivers from the Canadian Arctic to Mexico. Superb graphics and stunning photographs enrich the book's wealth of scientific detail."
- James R. Karr, Professor, University of Washington, Seattle

" Rivers of North America is a landmark contribution to the scientific study of flowing waters in North America. It is both authoritative and comprehensive, and could be as useful on a cross-country trip as in a personal library for reading and reference." - William M. Lewis, University of Colorado, Boulder

" Rivers of North America is an extremely valuable volume on our major continental rivers...Clearly, this is a volume that all devotees of rivers--scientists, resource managers, anglers, boaters, and the lay reader--definitely will want to own."
- Kenneth W. Cummins, Co-Director, Institute for River Ecosystems, Humboldt State University, Arcata, California
