Spring is the season for cherry blossoms in Japan. Viewing the cherry trees in bloom is so popular, that the TV weather report gives regular updates on where the trees are currently ready for viewing throughout Japan.  April is usually the month when the trees are at their most beautiful in Tokyo. The blooms don't last very long, so people organize cherry viewing parties all within a two-week period. The most famous cherry viewing place is Ueno Park. People lay out a picnic of box lunches called obento under the trees and enjoy drinking rice wine too! Here in Tuscaloosa, we have our own cherry trees donated by our sister city of Narashino, and we celebrate the wonderful gift with a city-wide Sakura Festival.

Spring Vocabulary:
Spring: haru
cherry blossom/tree: sakura
flower viewing: hanami
festival: matsuri
park: kooen
box lunch: obentou
rice wine: sake
