Minutes for Spectrum Meeting

Josh Burford calls meeting to order (3:06p.m.)

 

Old Business:

~Review proposal to have two co-advisors for group.

~Jonathon Meeks working with campus housing for GLBT issues:

No change in Housing Applications to reflect tolerance towards GLBT students..

Training for RAs for Safezone training

Bulletin boards in residence halls with info for UA residents

Directions to send students to Spectrum for advice and counsel on GLBT housing issues

David Hardy is doing outreach to other campuses to determine training for other schools

Requests Spectrum members review new web info for opinions and input.

 

Faculty and staff group is going to fundraise for GLBT scholarship which is listed on web

 

GLBT Library (from previous advisor) will be housed in Josh Burford’s office temporarily.

 

New Business:

~Mark Leggett introduces himself. Graduate level training for (school) counselors in training. Has a private practice and works with GLBT clients. Recently National Counseling Association formed a division for GLBT issues. Marks works with this organization to help educates school counselors on GLBT issues.

 

~Laura Whiting introduces herself. She wants to be more a resource, less an advisor. She wants a more informal role. She is worried about her time commitments. Graduate student working in technology. Non-traditional student from California. Has out gay daughter. Sees group as loose association, less formal group.

 

*Curt was president of Mississippi State Spectrum group. Would be willing to work as liaison between groups. Mississippi group has suffered some of the same problems our group has experienced. Need motivated people with sustained interest in group.

 

*Josh, Spectrum and Faculty GLBT Group are working on research and discussion about long term effects of GLBT policies on other campuses.

 

~For Future Group Consideration:

 

*Taylor wants to plan each month in advance on calendar. To encourage member participation and for public information (flyers).  Group agrees to plan a “month-ahead planning calendar”.

 

*Josh proposes celebration of Anniversary of Stonewall.

 

*Capture Studio Coffee Shop = consider claiming new coffee shop as our own.

 

*Have speakers at meetings… ex. Patricia Todd or Spencer Backus, Jerry Falwell’s gay son.

 

*Have Spectrum members organize speaker exchange network with other Cultural Group. (intercultural conversations)

 

*Look into Spectrum “Mile” (Josh will confirm a mile)

 

Consider “Fatherless Lunch on June 17th

 

Group lunch Sunday June 10th Applebee’s  Mall Location = 2:00p.m.
