AUTHOR INSTRUCTIONS

· Deadline: Papers for the Special Proceedings Issue are due June 1.

· Page Limits: Contributed papers are limited to four journal pages; invited papers are limited to eight journal pages.

· Submission: Authors should submit papers via the Journal of Alloys and Compounds website http://ees.elsevier.com/jalcom/:

o Choose "Author Login" (you may have to register first) then choose "Submit New Manuscript" and under "Choose Article Type"

o Select "Special Issue: RERC2008"

Registration Form:

Early registration ends May 15, 2008. Please print, complete, and mail the Registration Form to the RERC08 Office. Checks and money orders are preferred as payment, however, please contact the RERC08 Office directly if you require bank details for direct wire transfer. Credit cards cannot be accepted.

Hotel Information:

Please note that hotel reservations are to be made directly with the hotels by each participant. Hotel contact information is available in the linked file: RERC08 Area Hotels. Blocks of rooms have been held at the two closest hotels, Four Points and Hampton-University.

Birmingham to Tuscaloosa Shuttle Service:

For those attendees that do not wish to rent a car, a commercial shuttle service is available for transportation from the Birmingham Airport to Tuscaloosa hotels. The one way fare is $79.00 and the roundtrip fare is $103.00. To make a reservation call 205-591-5550 M-F 8:30 am-4:30 pm. Reservations should be made in advance and credit cards are be accepted.

MEETING INFORMATION:

Scope:

The program of the 25^th Rare Earth Research Conference (RERC08) will integrate basic and applied multidisciplinary research centered on the f-elements. Leading science will be featured in the form of invited oral presentations and contributed posters on topics in f-element chemistry, physics, and material, earth, environmental, and biological sciences. Highlighting the program will be the presentation of the Frank H. Spedding Award for excellence in rare earth research.

The Rare Earth Research Conferences (North America) alternates on a three year cycle with the International Conference on f-Elements (Europe) and the International Conference on Rare Earths (rest of the world). The 25^th Rare Earth Research Conference in Alabama, follows the successful 24^th RERC in Keystone, Colorado held June, 2005.

Program:

The conference will begin on Sunday evening with registration, the welcome reception and the Spedding Award presentation and lecture. The lectures, parallel sessions on specialized topics, and poster sessions will be held from Monday, June 23 to Thursday noon, June 26, 2008.

Proceedings:

A RERC08 Proceedings journal publication will be arranged. Only papers presented by one of the co-authors in person at the conference will be accepted into the proceedings. Papers for the proceedings will be peer reviewed by referees chosen by the Proceedings Editors. Each manuscript must correspond to one accepted RERC08 abstract.

Spedding Award:

A highlight of the meeting will be the recognition of the accomplishments of an internationally-recognized scientist with the presentation of the Spedding Award. This prestigious award is given in recognition of excellence and achievement in research centered on the science and technology of rare earths. The awardee is selected by a committee from submitted nominations. The award consists of a medal mounted on a plaque and a monetary sum of $1,000, sponsored by Bracco Research USA Inc. The Spedding Award winner will be asked to present a lecture on the highlights of his or her work at the meeting.

The conference will be held in Shelby Hall, located on The University of Alabama’s Tuscaloosa, AL campus. Directions from the closest airport (Birmingham, AL) to Tuscaloosa (ca. 60 miles) and to the Shelby Hall, are located at URL http://tour.ua.edu/. A car is recommended for transportation to and from the airport and between hotels and Shelby Hall.
