COURSE DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this course is to introduce Japanese contemporary literature from the Meiji period to the present. Many works are short stories, but some longer novels and poems are included. Students are expected to actively discuss the material, the authors, characteristics of Japanese literature in this period in a free manner. The required reading material is all in English (translation) and no Japanese language skill is required.
MATERIAL
Japanese Short Stories ed. by Theodore Goossen, Oxford University Press.
Other material will be placed on reserve at Gorgas Library.
REQUIREMENTS:
Students are required to read the focus material )attend every class meeting and participate ACTIVELY in the discussion. A student who fails to attend any class must write a THREE-page paper summarizing the readings for the focus material, and no more than THREE absences will be tolerated.
In addition to the discussion, students will be expected to make three short in-class presentations (approximately 20 minutes each) and write two short term papers(4-6 pages). The topics of the presentation and papers should be discussed in advance with the instructor.
