The Department of Chemistry is made up of 22 faculty and approximately 85 graduate students. The Department is housed in Shelby Hall, which was completed in 2004. The Department maintains advanced research facilities that provide students with hands-on access to a wide variety of modern instrumentation.

The Department's faculty are involved in a wide range of research activities in the traditional areas of chemistry--analytical, biochemical, inorganic, physical, and organic chemistry. In addition, the faculty are involved in a number of interdisciplinary research programs, such as materials science, information technology, green chemistry, fuel cells, hydrogen storage, and biomolecular products.

The graduate program in chemistry is a rigorous research and knowledge based degree that will prepare graduates for careers in industry and academia. Students begin their program with a balanced lecture course curriculum to provide necessary competence in their chosen area. Students then focus on research projects under the direction of their research advisor leading to the writing of a thesis or dissertation.

The University of Alabama is located on a beautiful campus in Tuscaloosa, which is in West Central Alabama. The University community offers a wide range of activities, such as sports, art, music, dance, theater. Tuscaloosa is a relatively small town offering a number of large city amenities. Northport, just north of Tuscaloosa is an artistic mecca for the region. The area around Tuscaloosa offers a wide range of outdoor activities.
