March 2005

In March 2005 AFI was honored to host the rebound Israeli novelist Savyon Liebrecht. Mrs. Liebrecht examined the everyday lives in Israel as an Israeli citizen and writer through her short stories. The event was made possible through the Consulate General of Israeli in Atlanta and through the great support of the Birmingham Jewish Federation. The event was co-sponsored by Alabama Friends of Israel student organization and the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society.

About the speaker:
Savyon Liebrecht (b. 1948, Munich, Germany) was born to Holocaust survivor parents who soon after immigrated to Israel. She studied Philosophy and Literature at Tel Aviv University and began publishing in 1986. She writes novels, stories, television scripts and plays. In 1987 she received the Alterman Award for her first collection of stories, and two of her television scripts received awards as well.

Alabama Friends of Israel was proud to host Congressman Robert Aderholt. Congressman Aderholt spoke on UA campus Monday April 11, 2005 at 7:00pm in the Ferguson Center's Anderson room about US-Israel continued successful relationship. Great thanks to AFI members who assisted to make this event possible. AFI would also like to thank the students and faculty who came to show their support to Israel.
