What is ALMUN?

ALMUN is a high school-level, assembly-based Model United Nations conference to be hosted by the Alabama International Relations Club at the University of Alabama. High schools throughout the state are invited to register delegations of students to enroll in ALMUN and take seats on one or more of five committees based on their country assignments, to debate issues that press on the global community by and large and work towards drafting resolutions to help solve these problems.

ALMUN will be hosted across the campus of the University in Tuscaloosa, Alabama from Thursday, February 18th through Sunday, February 21st, 2010.

A word from the Secretary General...

Greetings,

On behalf of the Alabama International Relations Club, I am excited to present you with the opportunity to take part in our Model United Nations Conference, and provide you with an overview of what this conference can do for you and your students.

The Alabama Model United Nations Conference, ALMUN, is designed to provide high school students from across the state with the opportunity to come together as delegates of various United Nations committees and other intergovernmental bodies and discuss topics that have the most impact on today’s global community.

It is our aim to educate young minds across the state of Alabama in ways of solving problems diplomatically; to raise awareness of the role the United Nations plays in world affairs; and to inspire the next generation of leaders to become more involved in global issues. Our five committees are designed to allow for high-level, thought provoking debate on innovative topics, and encourage students not only to develop their own voices, but also to learn by challenging one another’s ideas.

Over the course of the conference, each student will be challenged with scenarios and conflicts focusing on social, political, and economic issues from across the globe. Committee participation will instill students with important skills such as research, debate, negotiation, and public speaking. Specifically, we hope to further students’ knowledge of global issues and encourage the creation of state-wide partnerships and networks aimed at promoting the work of the UN throughout Alabama. We also hope to encourage the creation of new model UN programs in schools where they may not yet exist.

Following this letter, you will find an extensive explanation of the conference. Through your consideration of our conference, please do not hesitate to contact myself or any representative of ALMUN.

I am excited by the prospect of including students from your school and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards,

Alen Haric

Secretary General, ALMUN 2010
