What is Army ROTC?
Army ROTC is a college elective that focuses on leadership
and management skills. The ROTC program consists of
the Basic Course and the Advanced Course. The Basic
Course provides college students the ability to learn
about and experience the US Army without incurring any
military obligation during their freshman and sophomore
years. The Advanced Course prepares juniors, seniors
and graduate students for commissioning as officers
in the US Army.
Using the US Army as a case study, students examine
military organizational culture, roles and missions
of the armed forces, leadership management, and leader
communication skills. Additionally, through practical
exercises students develop individual leadership skills
in problem solving, land navigation, and rifle marksmanship.
Army ROTC also helps students acquire the leadership
skills and credentials employers are looking for in
employees and future managers.
What Benefits Does Army ROTC Provide?
Army ROTC prepares students for commissioning as officers
in the US Army and to be our countrys future leaders.
In addition, it presents students with an exceptionally
lucrative opportunity to earn a four, three, or two
year scholarship that pays: 100% of resident and nonresident
tuition at the University of Alabama; $900 per year
for books; and a monthly tax-free stipend for 10 months
of the year ($300/ month for freshman, 350 a month for
sophomores, $450 for juniors and $500 per month for
seniors).
Approximately 40 - 50% of each years Army ROTC students
are on scholarship. It is also important to note that
non-scholarship junior, senior and graduate Army ROTC
students receive the stipend benefits described above.
Who Takes Army ROTC?
Each year over 400 students attend Army ROTC courses.
These students include: varsity athletes; Presidential
Scholarship winners; National Hispanic Scholarship winners
and students from all academic fields. All of these
students follow in the footsteps of an extraordinarily
distinguished Army ROTC alumni. Several of our alumni
have been CEOs of Fortune 500 companies including John
McKinley, former President of TEXACO; 42 of our alumni
have become General Officers in the Army and two of
our alumni are recipients of the Congressional Medal
of Honor (our nations highest award for valor).
What else does the program offer?
Unlike other college courses, Army ROTC students have
multiple chances to apply and test their leadership
skills during class, leadership labs, field training
exercises and Camps. Additionally, students can attend
skill qualification courses such as Airborne School
at FT Benning, Georgia and Air Assault School at Schofield
Barracks, Hawaii. Summer internships with pay are also
available to junior level students at Army Posts worldwide
and nursing students have the opportunity to gain 3-4
weeks of clinical experience at a number of prestigious
Army hospitals.
How much time does ROTC require?
Freshman Scholarship students must take three ROTC electives
per semester, each worth one- semester hour. Non-scholarship
freshmen take only a single elective worth one-semester
hour each semester. Sophomore scholarship students must
take three ROTC electives worth a total of four-semester
hours per semester. Non-scholarship Sophomores take
one elective worth two-semester hours. Junior, senior
and graduate students must take three ROTC electives
worth a total of five-semester hours per semester.
Whats the obligation?
There is no military obligation for any Freshman students
or non-scholarship sophomores. Sophomore scholarship
students and contracted juniors, seniors, and graduate
students must accept a commission as an Army officer
upon receiving their degree and have the opportunity
to select Active Duty, the National Guard or the Reserves.
How do you get into the program?
Getting into the program is as simple as registering
for a class. All students should contact the Army ROTC
Enrollment Officer for advice on what specific classes
to take. Veterans, National Guardsmen, Reservists, and
Camp Challenge Graduates can enter the Advanced Course
upon completing 54 semester hours.
