JAY BARKER AND ANDY PHILLIPS
ARE TONIGHT’S FCA PROGRAM AT 9
Tonight, we have Jay Barker, Alabama’s all-time winningest quarterback, and Andy Phillips, Alabama’s most celebrated baseball player, as our program guests. Jay will speak and Andy will sing. What a lineup and a treat we have in store! Both were outstanding FCA leaders.
Jay came to Alabama from Trussville and became a starter at LSU as a freshman redshirt and went on to post a 35-2-1 record. He was a sophomore when Alabama won the national championship in 1992. He continues to hold many passing and touchdown records. As a senior, he was team captain, All-American, SEC Player of the Year by the coaches, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm winner as the nation’s most outstanding quarterback, and he was fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting. His years on campus were 1990-94.
Andy came to Alabama from Demopolis and was a four-year starter on the baseball team. Andy came in the fall of 1995 and when he played his last season in 1999, he had rewritten the Alabama record book. He made first-team All-American at third base and became Alabama’s all-time leader in games started (224), at-bats (904), runs scored (222), hits (322), home runs (61), RBI (226) and total bases (590). He was second in doubles (63) and triples (11).
However, they were known as much or more for their Christian stand against alcohol, drugs and stand for abstinence. Their influence could not be measured in the lives they touched. Today, Jay and his wife Amy have four children. They live in Birmingham where Jay is a sports talk show host on WJOX Radio (690) each morning from 6 until 9, and continues with a heavy speaking schedule. Saturday at the Auburn pre-game, Jay will run the ball out with his children.
Andy was drafted by the New York Yankees and just finished his fourth season in the minors. He ended the season with the Triple A Columbus (O) Yankees and was almost called up to the New York Yankees on Sept. 1. He had an outstanding 2002 summer.
Treat yourself from 9 until 10 tonight with Jay and Andy sharing their faith. Jay always delivers a winning message and Andy always hits home runs with his outstanding singing voice. FCA meets at the Calvary College Annex, one block from Bryant-Denny Stadium.
