GROUP PRESENTATION

The purpose of these presentations is to present a coherent account of how an issue of social discontent developed into a social protest movement primarily through the use of rhetoric in its various forms. Consequently, before organizing the group's formal presentation, you collectively will need to consider at least the following questions:

  1. What caused the movement? specific issues raised, socio-political climate, specific needs for change, etc.
  2. Who was responsible for initiating the movement? chief agitators, leader(s) of the group, influential legitimizers, etc.
  3. How did the movement function as an agitative body? Strategies used, forms of discourse, audiences addressed, etc.
  4. What message did the movement present to the general public? Did it alter that message for different audiences?
  5. What effects (measurable or otherwise) resulted from the movement's efforts?

Once the group has generally reached some agreement on these issues, then individual assignments may be made as to who should present what material in class. Thus, everyone in the group will need to research the movement as a whole to be able to make some decisions about the group presentation.

A group outline should be posted in WebCT in the group's designated presentation slot, along with any supporting materials, the class session beforehand.

Each student will be evaluated individually in three areas:

 Research and preparation

 Effectiveness within the group presentation

 Individual presentation effectiveness

On the day of the group presentation, each student should have ready to submit evidence of his/her individual research and preparation. Specifically, such evidence should include (but is not limited to) the following: 1) a complete list of references, using proper bibliographic form, and 2) a specific outline and supporting notes for the individual presentation.

NOTE: These materials should be submitted at the beginning of class. Be sure to print a copy of the following evaluation form and attach it to the materials.
