CRITICAL ANALYSIS #1

Assignment Directions

Submit no later than 19 June 2002, a critical analysis of a social protest website of your selection. Use the Gaines' reading for determining the criteria to be used. The grade for this assignment will constitute 15% of your final grade.

You are limited to 1500 words -- please do a word count and a spell check of your draft before saving it as an HTML file. Be sure to name the file "index.htm." Upload the document into your individual presentation module in WebCT on or before the due date. Computer woes are common -- don't wait until the last minute to discover them and ask for help.

Please note the weight given to proper documentation on your evaluation form. You are expected to follow the MLA style manual (see recommended text). If you are unfamiliar with academic standards of form, ask for help before submitting the paper. Papers submitted on the due date will be considered final drafts and will be evaluated for writing proficiency as well as content.

Requirements

To satisfy the content aspect of this assignment, the paper needs to include at least the following:

a summary of the criteria to be used, along with justification for their application in terms of the selected protest website

a thorough critical analysis of the content, design, and delivery of the website, in terms of its purpose and target audience

a discussion about how this critique relates to the course

Compare these requirements with the content points on the evaluation form (30 points possible).

To demonstrate writing proficiency for this assignment, the paper needs to be well organized and must meet normal academic standards of form. Be sure to include a clear purpose statement and a preview of the organizational structure of your paper in your introduction (5 points possible). Normal academic standards include spelling/typing accuracy, grammatical correctness, compositional proficiency, and proper documentation of all paraphrased and directly quoted material (15 points possible).

NOTE: Various forms of "spell-check" and "grammar-check" in computer software are helpful to alert you to problems, but they can not address all matters of academic writing standards. You must proofread your own writing for correctness, clarity, and appropriateness.

Evaluation

Please submit a copy of the "Paper Evaluation Form" in class, with your name on it, by the due date. The grading scale at the bottom indicates the letter grade equivalent for points earned. If your paper does not receive 35 points or better, you must revise and resubmit it within a week after it is returned to you.
