OBJECTIVES & REQUIREMENTS

This course is a required core course for students pursuing the Master of Arts Degree in Communication Studies. The primary objective of this course is to gain a useful understanding of the development of Greek and Roman rhetorical theory during the classical era. A secondary objective of the course is to acquire knowledge of the cultural and philosophical contexts out of which classical theories of rhetoric emerged.

To accomplish these objectives, each student is expected to meet the following requirements:

Read and be prepared to discuss all required readings for the course.

Submit discussion and performance assignments by the due dates.

Present 3 short papers (under 1500 words) on the assigned class date.

Complete a traditional, exhaustive bibliographic search for one of the seminar papers, and submit full bibliography in proper MLA or Chicago Press style, by the end of the semester.

Submit, by the end of the semester, a revised and extended version (2500-3000 words) of one paper.

Complete the midterm and final course examinations.
