Robert R. Haynes
Professor of Biological Sciences and Director of the Herbaria
Curator of Botany, Alabama Museum of Natural History.
The University of Alabama Herbaria
EDUCATION:   Dr. Haynes received his B. S. degree from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute (currently Louisiana Tech University) in 1967 with a major in Botany. His graduate studies included a M. S. degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1969, where he studied under Dr. John W. Thieret and prepared a thesis titled "A Monograph of the Genus Conopholis (Orobanchaceae)." Conopholis, a genus of dicots that are obligate parasites on the roots of Quercus (oaks), includes two species, one from the eastern United States and another from southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central America. Although Haynes had an interest in aquatic vascular plants during studies for his M. S. degree, his formal training in these interesting organisms began in 1969 when he entered Ohio State University to pursue the Ph. D. degree, which was received in 1973. For the Ph. D. degree, he prepared a revision of North American Potamogeton subsection Pusilli (narrow leaved pondweeds) under the direction of Dr. Ronald L. Stuckey.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:   Following completion of the Ph. D. degree, Haynes was Lecturer of Botany at Ohio State University where he taught General Botany and Local Flora. From 1974 to 1976, he was Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at Louisiana State University in Shreveport where he taught General Biology, Plant Taxonomy, and Biogeography. In 1976, he moved to the University of Alabama, where he moved through the ranks, becoming Professor of Biological Sciences in 1985. He has taught General Biology, Plant Taxonomy, Plant Systematics, Dendrology, Aquatic Vascular Plants, Economic Botany, and Field Botany. Finally, during the summers of 1973, 1975, and 1977, Haynes taught Aquatic Vascular Plants at the University of Michigan Biological Station on Douglas Lake at the northern tip of Michigan's Lower Peninsula.
RESEARCH INTERESTS:   Dr. Haynes' research interests are in the systematics of aquatic vascular plants, the monocot subclass Alismatidae in particular. The Alismatidae, a subclass of near cosmopolitan distribution, consists of 14 families. Haynes has prepared revisionary treatments of several taxa, including Potamogeton, Najas, Alismataceae and Limnocharitaceae. Techniques employed include comparative morphology (utilizing both the light microscope and the transmission electron microscope), comparative flavonoid chemistry, and cytology. Results from these various approaches are utilized in cladistic analysis for testing hypotheses of the phylogeny within the Alismatidae. In addition to revisionary treatments of the Alismatidae, Haynes has prepared treatments of one or all of the families of this subclass for Flora Neotropica, seven tropical American flora projects, Flora North America, and the Flora of Scandinavia.

Haynes' other research interests include establishment of botanical databases. He along with a former colleague initiated the SouthEastern Floral Information System (SERFIS) in 1988. SERFIS, as originally envisioned, is a database that, when mature, will contain label data of all herbarium specimens housed in the 100 plus herbaria of the Southeastern United States. It presently utilizes the DOS environment and is available on the Internet through our UNIX system. SERFIS is partially mature, with data from around nine herbaria in the database.

Presently, labels are being imaged using a digital camera, and these images are sent off shore via the Internet where they are keyed into a database format. The keyed data are returned to Tuscaloosa via the Internet and eventually will be made available on the Internet. In addition SERFIS is imaging every specimen, and these specimens will be available on the Internet for viewing with any Windows based system. SERFIS will be extremely useful to researchers, both pure and applied, in environmental biology. Botanists working on certain groups of plants will have one place they can search for data about plant taxa of their particular interests. In many cases, the image will be adequate for determination, and, in some instances, measurements can be taken directly from the image. Such electronic availability of the label data and images will eliminate the need to borrow specimens indiscriminately, as is presently done. Finally, environmental researchers will have one place to search for specimens in their habitat or locality of interest.

STUDENTS:   Four graduate students have completed their Ph. D. under Dr. Haynes' direction. These are Lawrence J. Davenport, who did a revision of Hydrolea (Hydrophyllaceae) and is currently at Samford University in Birmingham, AL; John H. Wiersema, who prepared a revision of Nymphaea subgenus Hydrocallis (Nymphaeaceae) and is currently with the United States Department of Agriculture at Beltsville, MD; Charles N. Horn, who prepared a revision of Heteranthera (Pontederiaceae), and is currently at Newberry College, Newberry, SC; and Robert Burckhalter, who revised North American Nyssa (Nyssaceae) and currently is at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. In addition, four students have received their M. S. degree under Haynes' direction, all doing floristic studies on the Alabama flora.
RESEARCH GRANTS:   Haynes has been PI or co-PI on NSF funded projects totaling in excess of $700,000. In addition, he has been PI or co-PI on contracts and non-NSF grants totaling about $200,000.
FIELD WORK: Haynes has performed field studies of aquatic vascular plants in Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, England, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Switzerland, USA, and Venezuela.
