Capstone Alliance is the professional organization at The University of Alabama for LGBTQ faculty, staff, and allies. The mission of Capstone Alliance is to advocate for a campus that is safe, inclusive, and supportive with regard to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer, (LGBTQ) and Allied faculty, staff, and students.
In pursuit of its mission, Capstone Alliance works to:
- Support the professional needs of its members by promoting and providing opportunities for networking among individuals and groups to articulate mutual concerns and addressing issues related to the professional needs of full- and part-time LGBTQ faculty and staff;
- Foster the professional advancement of full- and part-time LGBTQ faculty, staff, and allies;
- Foster the advancement of students associated with the LGBTQ community, including its allies;
- Work to alleviate problems that may negatively affect the LGBTQ community, as well as the means by which to enhance the welfare of the LGBTQ community, including but not limited to Safe Zone;
- Promote the cognizance of the variety of sexualities and gender expressions and facilitate increased awareness of the issues concerning the LGBTQ community through open dialogue and activism;
- Promote unity, communication, and collaboration in the service of advocacy work among the group’s members, allies, and affiliates, on campus and beyond, including affiliation with other campus and community organizations that support the mission of the Capstone Alliance; and
- Develop curricular and extracurricular programs and offerings that enhance knowledge of LGBTQ issues and promote the welfare of LGBTQ citizens in support of an enhanced LGBTQ-friendly environment.
Membership in Capstone Allliance and/or attendance at Capstone Alliance events (monthly meetings, committee meetings, on-campus social events, or off-campus social events) in no way requires that you publicly disclose your name/identity/affiliation. Meeting minutes list the names of members and/or visitors in attendance who have opted to publicly disclose. Individuals who would prefer their name not be included in the minutes may send an email to capstonealliance@gmail.com or may let the Secretary (Renee Wells) know before, during or after the meeting. The Capstone Alliance Membership Form includes a section for new members to indicate their preference regarding public disclosure.
