The Campus Veterans Association was created in spring of 2009. Ashkan Bayatpour, founder of CVA, created the organization as a response to a number of his friends and fellow veterans dropping out of the University of Alabama as a result of the hardships they faced transitioning back to civilian and student life. As the organization came online and the first generation of CVA leaders pushed the organization forward, it became clear that a myriad of issues faced student veterans.
As the organization has grown, so has the number of issues CVA has worked to address. The primary goal of the Campus Veterans Association is to serve the needs of student veterans at The Capstone. From advocating to the University Administration on behalf of the student veteran community to bringing veteran services to the campus, the goal of CVA is as the logo states: "taking care of our own." It is important to note that CVA also pays close attention to the unique issues that face students who serve or have served in the reserves and guard as they can often find themselves in difficult situations for a student veteran as well.
As this organization is still young, it will be constantly growing and improving. The intent is to continue to benefit from the bonds forged during our service, to be a support network for each other, to be a social network for fellow veterans, and (possibly most importantly) a central location to come to for all veterans' informational needs. The Campus Veterans Association wants to be a force of positive change on the UA campus regarding veteran affairs. Currently, the University of Alabama has begun work to support its veterans and ease their transition into the system. We will be the primary force that will assist the University in these changes and improvements.
Nationally, Campus Veterans Association is affiliated with Student Veterans of America. CVA is in the South East Region of Student Veterans of America.
