Alternative Spring Break
ASB 2006: South Alabama
In Spring 2006, eleven students traveled with staff members of CESR to work in the rural communities of south Alabama over Spring Break. Students provided assistance in damage relief efforts for areas affected by Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina and conducted vision screenings at area Head Start centers through Focus First.
Students conducted vision screenings in six counties (Mobile, Baldwin, Escambia, Conecuh, Monroe, Clarke) with three vehicles covering more than 1,100 miles each. Overall, approximately 450 children at 14 different daycares and Head Starts received free vision screenings with Focus First. In addition, the team provided a total of 60 manpower hours for debris removal and small construction on homes in Bayou La Batre, which had been damaged as a result of the hurricanes.
Students also spent time in daily reflective discussions both within the group and with community leaders on the topics of poverty, childcare, healthcare, and culture.
