Welcome

The Department of Chemistry at The University of Alabama offers degrees in chemistry at the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels. We are a growing program with 23 faculty and approximately 80 graduate students. Research and teaching are conducted in the major disciplines of chemistry: analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistries and biochemistry. In addition, chemistry faculty actively participate in interdisciplinary scientific research programs involving synthesis, the chemistry of materials, biological chemistry, and environmental chemistry.

Congratulations to all of the Chemistry students who received awards during Honors Week at UA.

Nine students doing research with Chemistry faculty received Randall Outstanding Undregraduate Research Awards. The students were: Jessica Duke (Dixon), JT Davis (Dixon), Ryan Flamerich (Dixon), Jessica Jones (Shaughnessy), Matthew Kelley (Dixon), Matthew Outlaw (Dixon, ChE), J. Pierce Robinson (Dixon, Business), Erica Schwalm (Frantom), Stephen Walker (Dixon)

Chemistry major Stephen Walker has been named a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship recipient. Stephen is a junior chemistry major and does research in Prof. David Dixon's lab.

Congratulations to senior Chemistry major Jessica Duke has received a prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. Jessica is the first student to receive one of these awards as an undergraduate student in our department. Graduate student Parker McCrary recieved Honorable Mention in the fellowship competition.

Congratulations to Dr. Arun Gupta and Dr. Robin Rogers who have been elected to the rank of AAAS Fellows by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Election as an AAAS Fellow isa highly prestigious honor recognizing distinguished efforts in the advancement of science.

Chemistry major John Canada has been chosen to attend the United Nations Climate-Change Conference in Durban, South Africa. John is an undergraduate research student with Dr. Robin Rogers. Graduate student Parker McCrary has recieved a Ciba Travel Award in Green Chemistry. Parker was one of four winners nationally. The funds will support his travel to the National ACS Meeting in San Diego. Parker is a member of Dr. Robin Rogers's research groupo.

A paper entitled, "Effects of transition metal ion coordination on the collision-induced dissociation of polyalanines" by Dr. Carolyn Cassady and Dr. John Vincent was chosen as a special perspective article by the Journal of Mass Spectrometry.

Dr. Thomas Vaid's synthesis of the first all organic porphyrin molecule, which contains an ethylene unit, rather than a metal, was highlighted in Chemical & Engineering News. The novel compound has potential applications in solar energy collection. See the original paper in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

The department is pleased to welcome its new class of graduate students.

Congratulations to the students who received degrees at the combined May/August commencement ceremony.
