GENERAL SYLLABUS FOR CRITICAL LANGUAGES

Class Scheduling

The CRITICAL LANGUAGES CENTER (CLC) classes normally begin one week after other University courses have started. Some classes are scheduled as TBA, and will be assigned based on the students’ class schedules and the language trainer’s available time.  To receive class schedules and room assignments, students must check MyBAMA during the drop-add period. We absolutely depend on student cooperation in this complex matter!

OBJECTIVES:

The main focus of our program is practical oral/aural skills, i.e., spoken language and listening comprehension. The final course grade for most languages will be determined according to the performance of those skills, as measured by an oral interview conducted by a qualified EXAMINER in the language.

For such languages where the texts involve learning a new written script (such as Arabic, Korean, Hebrew, Hindi and others), a degree of reading and writing will figure in the FINAL EXAMINATION.

Format:

Students will be provided with an in-class language “trainer” who is a native/near native speaker of the targeted language, who will conduct speaking sessions in each class meeting. During the sessions students will actively participate using spoken language on pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and conversation. Students are required to study the textbook and listen to assigned AUDIO MATERIALS (CDs, or computer sound files). These audio materials may be purchased with the textbook or may be made available separately through the Language Resource Center or on our website. Language trainers will provide some measure of assessment through the semester by use of the STUDENT PERFORMANCE SHEET reports.

ATTENDANCE:

Students are to meet with the language trainer three (3) hours per week (or equivalent). Students are required to attend all the sessions. More than FIVE (five) absences may result in a grade of F.

Academic Misconduct:  Any academic misconduct by students (includes cheating as described in the Faculty Handbook) will be reported to the Office for Academic Affairs for proper penalties.

To request disability accommodations, contact Disabilities Services (348-4285). After initial arrangements are made with that office, contact the instructor.
