SUMMER PROGRAM

Alabama in Germany 2012 dates to be determined

Alabama in Germany is a University-sponsored intensive five-week summer program The Alabama in Germany program. In 2011 took place for the first time in Berlin. During an initial week of travel the group first visited Munich, Nuremburg, Neuschwanstein Castle, then Weimar with Buchenwald before arriving in Berlin. While in Berlin, students lived in an apartment with three bedrooms, a living room with a kitchen and a bathroom, all completely furnished. Three students shared an apartment, but every student had his/her own bedroom.

While in Berlin all students took a German language course, offered through the Humboldt University in Berlin. Students are placed into German courses based on a placement test; beginners enroll in the equivalent of German 101. Classes are taught M – F in the mornings. In the afternoon students meet twice a week on an informal basis with their content course instructor for excursions to sites relating to their content course of choice. While traveling and in Berlin, the group visits sites relating to the history of Nazi Germany and Germany's Communist past.

The costs of the program for 2011 (without airfare) for five weeks in Germany was $5400 including tuition for 6 hours of German credit, group travel in Germany, most excursions and entrance fees, single occupancy room in a dorm, and some group meals.
