German Consul General Dr. Lutz Görgens visited The University of Alabama

The Consul General from the German Consulate in Atlanta, Dr. Lutz Görgens, visited The University of Alabama on September 22. The title of his talk was “Germany and the Future of Europe.”

Dr. Görgens, a native of Dusseldorf, Germany, is the official representative of the German government to the Southeastern United States. During his career, Dr. Görgens has worked as a desk officer for the Federal Foreign Office in Bonn, Germany, and later as first secretary and head of the Economic Section for the German Embassy in Mexico. He later became a Deputy Consul General in Boston, head of the Economic Section in the German Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, and head of the European Internal Market Affairs Unit of the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.

Ian McQuistion, Charles (Tom) Moore, and David Vogt -
Recipients of Federation of German-American Clubs scholarship for 2011/2012
Ian McQuistion, Charles (Tom) Moore, and David Vogt are the recipients of a scholarship from the Federation of German-American Clubs that allows them to spend a year in Germany. Ian McQuistion will be studying in Mannheim, Tom Moore in Kassel, and David Vogt in Erfurt.

German Day 2011 - Mercedes Benz US International Scholarship Winner

Tyler Jones is the winner of the German Day 2011 MBUSI $1000 scholarship award for Excllence in German.

Here is what Tyler's German teacher says about him: "He is a very talented and well-rounded young man. Not only does he excel in academics at Cullman High School, he is also involved in many school activities and in the community. Tyler is Treasurer of the National Honor Society, Vice President and Section Leader of the band, and a National Merit Commended Scholar. He is also involved in German Club, Leo Club, Scholars Bowl, National Society of High School Scholars, Indoor Drumline, and Delta Epsilon Phi. He is also a great asset to the Children’s Ministry, Media Ministry, and Vacation Bible School at Northbrook Baptist Church in Cullman. He also provides free tutoring services to students in our area who are struggling academically to succeed. In his free time, he enjoys writing music, playing piano and percussion, church activities, and hanging out with his friends. He is well liked by all of the students and faculty at Cullman High School and will be a great asset to The University of Alabama."

Sibylle Lewitscharoff at The University of Alabama

German writer Sibylle Lewitscharoff
visited the University of Alabama on January 26 and read from her novel Montgomery at the University Club.

The event was sponsored by the Anonymous Lecture Fund and Capstone International Office.
