Chemical Hygiene Program

The University of Alabama has a Chemical Hygiene Program (CHP) established to ensure that all research, testing and teaching activities involving the use of chemical materials and the facilities used to conduct such work are in compliance with all external regulations and applicable University policies.  Some applicable regulations and guidelines include:

The University of Alabama reserves the right and the obligation to impose additional terms and conditions on investigators who conduct research or testing or engage in teaching activities that involve chemicals that are potentially harmful to humans, animals, or the environment.

The most current version of the University of Alabama Chemical Hygiene Plan is maintained on the EHS website (www.bama.ua.edu/~ehs).  Each lab should have a copy of the CHP for their own lab on file and readily available in their workspace (see below).  Each lab should have standardized signage indicating the hazards potentially present in their work space.  For new or updated signage, complete a request form (below) and submit it to EHS (mwhitney@bama.ua.edu or Box 870178).  EHS posts the frames and the signs for this program.  Please note that each lab is also subject to the Research Security Program

Unwanted chemicals will be picked up for disposal by EHS representatives.  Contact EHS (jhallman@bama.ua.edu, 8-5905) to request a pickup.  Labels for unwanted chemical are below.  Additional information about the unwanted chemical program can be found at http://www.bama.ua.edu/~ehs/hmmp.html#Unwanted%20chems

Forms

You can download these forms, insert your information, and email the forms to mwhitney@bama.ua.edu.  Alternatively, a hardcopy can be sent to Box 870178.  All information must be reviewed and verified annually and updated any time hazards or procedures change.
