Research Involving Select Agents - Biological Safety Program

Federal law now regulates the possession and transfer of selected hazardous agents.  As of April 15, 1997, commercial suppliers of "Select Agents" must register with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  CDC is authorized to inspect facilities seeking registraion to determine whether the applicant facility meets the established criteria.  Legislation in 2002 added "USDA High Consequence Livestock Pathogens and Toxins".

Bear in mind that regulations now cover the use of recombinant DNA components that are involved in the virulence or toxicity of these select agents.
