Suggested Topics for Seminar Paper
1. Compare the films Cabaret and The Blue Angel as portrayers of German society in the early 20th century. Similarities? Differences?
2. Discuss the phenomenon of teacher-student relationships in Professor Unrat, the film The Blue Angel, and another work or film of your choice.
3. Compare the social criticism in Metropolis and The Threepenny Opera.
4. Discuss the representation of war in three authors and/or artists of your choice.
5. Discuss the role of the artist in the Weimar era. You could use Hesse’s Demian and Thomas Mann’s Death in Venice, or one of these works plus another one of your choice.
6. Investigate types of alienation in Metropolis, Kafka’s Metamorphosis, and/or another work of your choice.
7. Compare views of the New Woman using The Blue Angel, Pandora’s Box, and/or another work of your choice (you might also include art works).
8. Compare attitudes toward love and/or sex in The Blue Angel, Death in Venice, and Pandora’s Box.
9. Discuss the representation of homosexuality in Death in Venice and Mädchen in Uniform (film by Leontine Sagan). If you choose this topic, see the instructor for access to the Sagan film.
10. Compare the element of horror in Kafka’s In the Penal Colony with the film Nosferatu and/or M (film by Fritz Lang). If you choose this topic, see the instructor for access to the Lang film.
11. Compare the protagonist of Hesse’s Demian with the protagonist of Kafka’s Metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa and/or the protagonist in The Judgment.
