ESSAY ASSIGNMENT #2

Write a brief essay (undergraduates c. 3 pages, graduates somewhat longer) on one of the following topics. Graduate students, please write on topic #1. Please submit the assignment as both hard copy and on a PC diskette (Microsoft Word format preferable).

  1. Compare Jutta Brückner’s "A Thoroughly Demoralized Girl" and Helma Sanders-Brahms’ "Germany, Pale Mother" in terms of the opposition between story (histoire) and discourse (discours). See Richard McCormick’s essay "Confronting German History," pages 194-95 (on reserve in dept.) for a definition and comparison of these terms.
  2. Compare the titles of the films by Brückner and Sanders-Brahms. Are they appropriate? What questions do they raise? What is their relationship to the films? Do they add anything to the viewer’s understanding of the films? Are the titles integrated into the films? If so, in what way?
