Course Description:
French 102 is a four skills language course in which you will develop
your listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities in French, as well
as learn about French-speaking cultures around the world. French 102 is
the second-semester elementary French course at the University of Alabama.
The course prerequisite is a grade of C or higher in Fr 101 at this university.
Course Objectives:
1. To continue development of the communicative skills of listening
and speaking in French with the purpose of facilitating personalized exchange
in the target language;
2. To further develop reading and writing skills with the purpose of
acquiring an elementary degree of literacy in the target language;
3. To learn more about the ethnic, racial, and cultural diversity within
France and the Francophone world;
4. To broaden awareness of the relatedness of all cultures and to better
understand those in the Francophone world.

THE CLASSROOM IS A WORKPLACE AND YOU ARE EXPECTED TO ACT ACCORDINGLY.
NO EATING OR DRINKING IS ALLOWED.
Tests:
These will last approximately one class period each and will focus
mainly on material from the preceding Dossier or Dossiers. It is imperative
that you be present on the day of a test, as no make-ups are given. A missed
exam will result in your receiving a grade of F.
Quizzes:
These will last approximately fifteen minutes each and will focus on
elements decided upon by your instructor. If you are absent on the day
of a quiz, you will receive a grade of zero for that quiz.
Oral exercise:
This will consist of a set of questions asked by your instructor about
subjects such as family life, vacations, school, leisure time activities,
etc.; details TBA. Your grade will be based upon your overall fluency,
grammatical and lexical accuracy.
Written final exam:
This will be comprehensive in nature. Your instructor will provide
you with more information toward the end of the semester regarding the
place and time of the final exam. If you have a conflict with another exam,
see Madame de Rocher, room 229 for a make-up time.
Homework, preparation and participation:
Your instructor will assign specific exercises to be written out and
turned in as homework. You will also go to the Language Center and do all
the exercises on CAN 8 and those designed by the authors of your book.
The material to be prepared for each day is indicated on the course syllabus.
You are expected to come to class prepared and to participate in all class
activities.
Course Attendance policy:
You may have up to five absences, for whatever reason, without penalty.
After your fifth absence, two percentage points will be deducted ftom your
final grade for each subséquent absence, whatever the reason for
the absence may be. We do not accept medical excuses. In case of serious
illness, your instructor will discuss the situation on a case-by-case basis.
