Thompson Research Group

Welcome to the Thompson Research Group home page.

Professor Thompson’s research addresses processing-microstructure-property interdependence by investigating phase transformation and phase stability in a variety of material systems at different length scales. Our group’s aim is to determine phase transformation mechanisms and engineer them to obtain a desired microstructure and/or property with an emphasis on using and developing analytical microscopy techniques to quantify this phenomenon.

Detailed research efforts include:
1) Tailoring multi-phase microstructures in metals and ceramics
2) Structural characterization of magnetic nanostructures.
3) Thin film and heterostructure growth behavior
4) Development of microscopy-based strategies and techniques for the preparation and the characterization of materials
