Raman Sehgal A Leader by All Accounts, Except Mine

Hello HPSA members, non-members, and assorted adults. I guess at this point you are well into reading this fine piece of styled-literary achievement, courtesy of our friend Joey. Thanks Joey. I'd also like to thank the academy for choosing me for this award. And then all you little people, without any of you, none of this would be possible. But please, quit following me around all the time, it's really getting creepy! So far, that's all I have prepared as far as acceptance speeches go, for when I win something prestigious (and don’t worry, the time will come), whether it be a Nobel, a Pulitzer or an Oscar. Does that seem a little presumptuous? I say, "always be prepared." A lot of other people say, "you've got a bit of an ego." And I reply, “Better to have a big ego than a mom addicted to Prozac™.” And then they run away crying. Heh.
Anyhow, I really hope that by this point you've learned not to take much of what I say too seriously, that is, at least when I'm not talking about all-powerful, all-relevant HPSA issues. So what does the coming month have in store? Well believe it or not, New Hall finally does have the monstrosity of a TV ready and waiting to be watched by all those who have been ready and waiting for so long. As I'm sure you've already heard by now, UHP and HPSA are now taking art submissions for placement in the lobby of New Hall. The deadline, February 26, is fast approaching, so get it in gear, and draw, paint, print, or whatever you have to do to get your art in so you can have the chance to be immortalized on the wall. Bring your submissions, in any flat medium (no sculptures, please) to Temple Tutwiler. Final decisions will be made by February 28th, and "winners" announced at the March HPSA meeting.
Still got even more of an artistic/creative urge? Design next year's styling HPSA shirt, and be the envy of your peers. If that's not enough incentive, the winner will get a free t-shirt of their own. I don't know about you, but I will pretty much do anything, including selling my soul, to get my hands on a free t-shirt. Think about it this way, if your design wins out, you get a free shirt of your own design, not to mention the fact hundreds of HPSA members will be wearing your design on their back. Submissions are due, also in Temple Tutwiler, by the end of February, so we can announce a design and start selling the masses their new shirts by March.
What else is going down in HPSA land? Plans for the annual trip down to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery are becoming more and more solid. At tonight's meeting, we're going to decide once and for all which show we're going to make, whether it be Julius Caesar or A Midsummer Night's Dream. Comedy or tragedy, the decision between the two funny masks that symbolize the theatre realm is upon us. Either way, we'll be heading down there for a Saturday afternoon show sometime in March or April, just depending on whichever date fits best. We will have that decided by the end of the meeting. Between the massive group rate we get because we're just that cool, and the fact that HPSA's going to foot some of the bill, your ticket would be around much less than what it would normally cost you to see a show, plus you get to see it in the company of our rad crowd. I encourage everyone to go. Sign up fast so we can go ahead and secure tickets too. Too much culture for you? Well, we're still looking into the possibility of making it to a hockey or football game in Birmingham, and maybe even some rock-climbing or canoeing. Help us out though, and let us know what you want to do.
Finally, elections are upon us. I'm sure you've probably had more than your fair share of elections in November, but these are the ones where your vote actually does count. First off is SGA. If you're interested in working on assorted campus policies, and representing your college, consider running for either an executive or senate position. You've got until February 20th to tell the powers that be that you're actually interested in running. Even more important are elections for next year's HPSA officers, who shall decide the course of events for the coming year's honors students. If you're interested in running for any positions (president, vice-president, third member, secretary, treasurer, sports chair, librarian, historian, information chair, or service chair), check out the website to see what filling these positions actually entail. Heck, talk to or email the current officer in that position and see what they have to say. And on that note, I really have nothing left to say.

-Raman Sehgal,
President, but for how much longer?
