New Dependent Eligibility Rules

In accordance with the Federal Health Care Reform Legislation, adult children up to age 26, regardless of marital status, student status, residency or financial dependency, are now eligible for coverage under the University’s medical plan. Adult children are defined as:

  • A biological child, adopted child, foster child, or stepchild. A foster child is any child placed with you by an authorized placement agency or by judgment, decree, or other order of any court of competent jurisdiction.
  • The eligibility requirements for any other children such as grandchildren must meet the same requirements as foster children and must be placed with you by decree or other order of any court of competent jurisdiction, for example, legal custody, legal guardianship. However, the University is not required and will not provide coverage for a child of a child receiving dependent coverage.
  • The eligibility requirements for permanently incapacitated dependents age 26 and over remain the same.
