31st Annual Ramsey Award Celebration

A gala celebration is being planned by Trustees of the John Fraser Ramsey Award on Saturday, April 19th to honor 2008 Award recipient, Alex Flachsbart. Enclosed is a memorandum introducing Alex as the newest member of the Ramsey family.

Among University student awards, the Ramsey Award is unique. The Award is particularly noted for selecting persons with broad humanistic interests, who have demonstrated selfless leadership and have served as positive role models for their contemporaries. Not only is the recipient honored with recognition and a substantial cash award, but the Ramsey Award winner is given the opportunity to participate in a culturally enriching European travel experience. However, perhaps the most enduring facet of the Award is becoming an integral part of the Ramsey family, a diverse group of former students, colleagues, friends, and past recipients, who are committed to perpetuating John Ramsey’s high standards of academic excellence, humanitarian service, genuine friendship, and kind-hearted generosity. The Ramsey Award Fund currently has a principal balance of approximately $73,000 which currently supports a $5,000 Award. In 1994, Trustees of the Award began offering each recipient an opportunity to supplement their academic education through a European travel experience. This facet of the award was named the “John Ramsey Great Ideas Tour” to commemorate a two-semester senior level inter-disciplinary course that John was noted for at the University entitled “Great Ideas of Western Civilization”. To date, thirteen recipients have taken advantage of this offer and have been presented with airfare to Europe, a Eurail pass, and in kind support from Trustees and friends in Europe.

The Ramsey family would like to give special thanks to two individuals, Dr. Larry Kirkland and Ms. Elizabeth Crump for their generous gifts to establish a $52,000 endowment to support the John Ramsey Great Ideas Tour. Previously, the Great Ideas Tour was supported through annual gifts from friends of the Ramsey Award. Creation of this new endowment establishes a permanent fund, to support the Great Ideas Tour in perpetuity. Since the establishment of the Great Ideas Tour endowment, other gifts have been added to the fund bringing the principal balance to approximately $56,000, which will support the Great Ideas Tour at approximately a $2,300 level.

On the occasion of the 31st anniversary of the Award, we are encouraging friends and admirers of John Ramsey to join in supporting the new Great Ideas Tour endowment. Increasing the Great Ideas Tour endowment to $60,000 would allow for support of the Great Ideas Tour at a $2,500 level. If you would like to make a contribution to this fund, please make your check payable to The University of Alabama John F. Ramsey Great Ideas Tour Endowed Support Fund and mail it to: Office of Advancement, P. O. Box 870122, Tuscaloosa, Al 35487-0122. All donations are tax deductible.

We wish to invite each of you to join us on April 19th as we welcome 2008 Award recipient, Alex Flachsbart into the Ramsey family. A reservation form is enclosed.

SUBJECT:        Introducing Alex Flachsbart---2008 John Fraser Ramsey Award Winner

A Political Science and Economics major and International Relations minor who recently was named to the USA Today, All-USA Academic Team, Alex is a magnificent addition to the roster of extraordinary young men and women who have won the Ramsey Award.

How does one adequate define this gifted student who was selected UA’s Freshman of the Year, who hails from the shadows of John Ramsey’s alma mater, The University of California at Berkeley, and who is leaving a profound mark on our University. Whether designing the BamaBike Project, co-founding University Stewards, building consensus for the Public Policy Center, or mentoring and teaching at-risk disadvantaged elementary school students, Alex consistently combines astonishing vision, insatiable curiosity, and infectious enthusiasm, with a gift for motivating others to achieve their full potential.

Faculty and staff at the University made these observations. “It’s a shame there is no interview process...five minutes of Alex in person is worth umpteen recommendation letters.” “He is…the ideal student, always curious, always analytic, always synthesizing, and always delighting in the ways of learning.” “I know of no UA junior more liberally educated or more likely to be a most productive citizen than Alex. He energizes a room when he walks into it. His brilliance, enthusiasm, and enjoyment of his work are infectious, and people always feel better for having encountered him. He will convince you that you can do just about anything, and he will help you do it.” “Not dominated by pursuit of recognition or power, he has an ability to lead through humility, wisdom, and deeper insight.” “As a team player, Alex works with people’s strengths and is motivated by challenges.” “For the first time in our history, Alex, an undergraduate student, is chairing a subcommittee comprised of faculty and staff…to critically look at the freshman and sophomore year experience.”

Alex is the son of Mark and Michelle Flachsbart of Concord, California.
