The John Fraser Ramsey Award

The Cook and Host

Doc loved to host his friends, whether informally, for his famous martinis at the end of the day, or on more formal occasions, when he created a variety of personalized dishes. Here are a few of his recipes.

Dr. Ramsey's martini, made in advance, kept in freezer at his apartment
Dr. Ramsey preferred a martini which was not dry and was dirty, which means that it had a small amount of olive juice in it. The gin and vermouth were shaken with no ice, then chilled in the freezer. Ice never came in contact with any ingredient in Doc's martini.
1. In a shaker, mix 3 parts gin to 1 part vermouth.
NOTES: The brand of gin is of little significance; but the vermouth must be Martini & Rossi.
Under no circumstances is any ice ever to be allowed to come in contact with the gin/vermouth mixture.
2. Place the container of gin and vermouth in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator. Although alcohol will not freeze in a home freezer, it will achieve a somewhat syrupy consistency. Once the mixture is thoroughly chilled, it can be used at any time a martini is called for, such as 5 o'clock (pm), the birth of a godchild, etc.
3. Whenever a martini is called for (see step 2), run a bit of lemon rind around the lip of a martini glass, then place a small amount of olive juice in the glass (the glass should be chilled, and Doc even had an "instant chiller" device for a while, but this step can be omitted after a sufficient number of martinis have been consumed), then add the chilled gin/vermouth mixture and 2 olives, preferably the type stuffed with an almond. Drink. Repeat once.

His speciality, a meal served on any and all occasions:
A casserole of Betty Crocker Au Gratin Potatos and cocktail sausages, baked together
Tossed salad
French bread

Tomatoes Kikgrowski, created on the spot during a cookout at the home of Coach Joe Kilgrow. This is in his own handwriting.

Cornish Hens Surpreme, taken from his recipe box.
