Pre-trial persons who are mentally ill are
admitted for restoration to competency. Post NGI patients are admitted for long
term treatment, and eventual return to the community, if possible.
Occasionally, the Governor will transfer an
inmate from the Dept of Corrections; these people are officially removed from
the DOC, and made patients, with the same status as all others, while with us.
We are a Hospital, not a prison.
We operate 24 acute admission beds, 44 long
term NGI beds, and the rest are both long term and IST patients who have not
recovered.
SMF was first Accredited by the JCAHO in
1985, and has not only been accredited ever since, it was accredited with
commendations in 1994, & 1997, placing it in the top 5% of all hospitals
nationally.
We won the Gloria Huntly Award from NAMI in
2004 as the Best Hospital in terms of reducing Seclusions & Restraints.
We have an ACGME Forensic Fellow Program.
