ANTHROPOLOGY

ANT 515 Peoples of East Asia (3hrs) - Survey of the standards, customs, and beliefs that typify East Asian cultures.

ANT 516 Peoples of Southeast Asia (3hrs) - A survey of the standards, customs, and beliefs that typify Southeast Asian cultures.

ANT 517 Peoples of the Pacific (3hrs) - A survey of the standards, customs, and beliefs that typify the cultures of Oceania.

ANT 518 Development in Non-Western Cultures (3hrs) - A theoretical and descriptive study of social change and development in non-Western societies. Major emphasis will be the effect of change on indigenous institutions.

ART HISTORY

ARH 455 (3hrs) - Selected topics in the art of Asia.

HISTORY

HY 501 Japanese Civilization to 1550 (3hrs) - Survey of Japanese history from the beginning to through the 16th century. Major emphasis is on the period after 400 A.D.

HY 502 Modern Japanese since 1550 (3hrs) Major emphasis is on the end of the Tokugawa Period (1800-68) and the rise of modernized Japan in the Meiji Period (1868-1912) and the 20th century.

HY 557 World War 1 (3hrs) - "The war to end all wars" from the European crises cumulating at Sarajevo in 1914 to peacemaking at Versailles in 1919. Major emphasis is on the western and eastern fronts and on the war at sea.

HY 558 World War 2 (3hrs) - The Global Conflict, or series of conflicts, from Manchukuo in 1931 to Tokyo Bay in 1945. Battles on land, at sea, in the air; life on the home fronts and in enemy-occupied areas; and the wars legacy to future generations.

POLITICAL SCIENCE

PSC 534 International Political Economy (3hrs) - Deals with the international trade and finance regimes, foreign economic policy, transnational corporations in the world economy, North-South and East-West relations, and the implications of economic independence.

PSC 541 Comparative Foreign Policy (3hrs) - A comparative analytical treatment of how foreign policy is developed by major powers. Attention is given to its determinants, formulation, and execution.

The political science department offers a wide variety of courses which focus on Political Theory, Public Policy and Administration, and Comparative Political systems. These courses offer some information regarding the political system of Japan and its comparisons and contrasts to other systems throughout the world. PSC 534 and PSC 541 are examples of these.

BOOKS & ART

BA 541 Papermaking (3hrs) - Provides hands-on experience in the fundamentals of making both western and oriental papers using a variety of fibers. The objective is to produce a large number of reference samples rather than to mass produce sheets of paper or one-of-a-kind paper works.

BA 542 Decorated Papers (3hrs) - Introduction to decorative techniques including experiences in the decoration of papers for binding and printing in a variety of techniques: Turkish Watercolor marbling, Swedish oil base marbling, Japanese suminagashi, paste papers, printed papers, and stenciling.

HY 243 Asian Civilization to 1500 (3hrs) - Broad survey from the earliest times covering India, China, Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, with largely cultural and religious emphases.

HY 244 Modern Asia since 1500 (3hrs) - Conditions of the various Asian civilizations in the 16th century, followed by the arrival of the Europeans, with emphasis on imperialism, colonialism, and Asian nationalism.

HY 306 History of Oriental Thought (3hrs) - Survey of seminal thinkers from the orient, with a special effort to place their thought in social and cultural content.

HY 357 World War I (3hrs) - "The war to end all wars," from the European crises culminating at Sarajevo in 1914 to peacemaking at Versailles in 1919, with emphasis on the western and eastern fronts and on the war at sea. HY 401 Japanese Civilization to 1550 (3hrs) - Survey of Japanese history from the beginnings through the 16th century. Major emphasis on the period after 400 AD.

HY 402 Modern Japan since 1550 (3hrs) - Major emphasis on the end of the Tokugama period (1800-69), the rise of modernized Japan in the Meiji period (1868-1912) and the 20th century.

JA 101 Elementary Japanese I (4hrs) - Five hours of instruction per week. Acquisition of Elementary Japanese language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

JA 102 Elementary Japanese II (4hrs) - Prerequisite: JA 101 or equivalent. Five hours of instruction per week. A continuation of JA 101.

JA 201 Intermediate Japanese I (3hrs) - Prerequisite: JA 102 or equivalent. A continuation of JA 101 and JA 102.

JA 202 Intermediate Japanese II (3hrs) - Prerequisite: JA 201 or equivalent. A continuation of JA 201.

JA 350 Japanese Literature in Translation (3hrs) - Introduction to Japanese Literature. No knowledge of Japanese is required.

JA 353 Japanese Conversation and Composition (Credit Varies) - Prerequisite 202 or equivalent, and permission of the instructor. Oral drills, pronunciation exercises, simple oral reports, calligraphic exercises, and composition of letters and reports.

JA 360 Commercial Japanese I (3hrs) - Prerequisite: JA 202 or equivalent. Acquisition of business Japanese used in commercial transactions. Emphasis is on business letters, business terminology, business customs, and business conversation.

JA 361 Commercial Japanese II (3hrs) - Prerequisite JA 360 or equivalent. A continuation of JA 360.

JA 410 Fourth-Year Reading and Writing Japanese (3hrs) - Prerequisite JA 302 or equivalent. A continuation of JA 301 and JA 302 with emphasis on development of reading and writing skills.

JA 411 Fourth-Year spoken Japanese (3hrs) - Prerequisite: JA 302 or equivalent. A continuation of JA 301 and JA 302 with emphasis on development of listening and speaking skills.

JA 450 Seminar in Japanese Literature I (3hrs) - Seminar on topics in Japanese Literature read in English translation. This course may be subsituted for ASST 450.

JA 451 Seminar in Japanese Literature II (3hrs) - Prerequisite: JA 450 or permission of the instructor. A continuation of JA 450. Topics in Japanese Literature; may involve readings in Japanese and/or English translations, according to student' interests and background.

JA 481:482 Directed Readings in Japanese. One to Four Hours. Prerequisite: JA 410 or permission of instructor.

PSC 331 Japanese Sociopolitical Systems (3hrs) - Study of Japanese politics with emphasis on political culture, parties, and public policy.


RELIGIOUS STUDIES

REL 100 Introduction to Religious Studies (3hrs) - Various methodological approaches to the academic study of religion, with examples of religious life and thought drawn from a variety of Eastern and Western traditions.

REL 120 Survey of Eastern Religions (3hrs) - Survey the rise and early development of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, through the study of basic oriental religious texts.

REL 209 Comparative Studies in Eastern and Western Religious Thought (3hrs) - A comparative study of the philosophical issues and various methodologies in Western and Eastern religious and philosophical traditions.
