      Dead of night pervades
      Sound of rose petals dropping
      Wake up crickets! Sing!

3rd Place: Ms. Mary Nunley Hutchins - Tuscaloosa, Alabama

      Long budding shrub, high
      Canyon bird ...whose song freed you
      To sing for yourselves?

4th Place: Ms. Ann P. Park - Aliceville, Alabama
      Jewel of Summer
      Hovers over bee balm beds
      Fueling himself.

5th Place: Ms. Lewis Adam Shumaker - Tuscaloosa, Alabama

      Frozen Gargoyle Cat
      In my hand a tall blue glass
      Hears clear ice crackle.

      The red cap and gowns
      A child stumbles down the step
      Graduation Day.

2nd Place: Ms. Tamara Baker - Birmingham, Alabama
      Oaks sway and leaves float,
      Drifting down to the heads of
      Sweet lovers below.

3rd Place: Ms. Olivia Erickson - Indian Springs, Alabama
      The sun disappears
      Kissing the tips of mountains
      With rays of splendor.

4th Place: Ms. Jennifer Johnson - Phenix City, Alabama
      Running, jumping splash
      The water parts beneath me
      I emerge refreshed.

5th Place: Ms. Amanda Teague - Birmingham, Alabama
      Fiercely, the wind blows
      Against the delicate limbs
      Of a sad willow.

Elementary School Category

1st Place: Mr. Josh Jordan - Birmingham, Alabama
      Songs of wind whisper
      Tall brown trees lean low to hear
      The soft breeze of time.

2nd Place: Ms. Martha Patton - Tuscaloosa, Alabama

      A peaceful smoothness.
      Ground sleeps under snow blanket
      Crunch! I woke it up.

3rd Place: Ms. Terri Roberts - Birmingham, Alabama

      Trees, bow to nature
      In the strong winds, you bend down
      With your hair of leaves.

4th Place: Mr. Joseph Sewell - Tuscaloosa, Alabama
      Everything is wet.
      The snake and worm slithers by.
      Alike in wiggles.

5th Place: Mr. Alexis Boozer - Montgomery, Alabama
      When the sun rises
      And the rooster crows loudly
      Slowly we awake.

      Farmer's silhouette
      With the setting sun behind
      Sea of cotton.

      From orange to purple
      A gentle sunset
      Colors the snowman.

3rd Place: Ms. Satoko Seale - Moundville, Alabama
      Cherry flowers
      Dance down to the ground
      Creating a road of impermanence.

4th Place: Ms. Shigeko Honda - Pensacola, Florida
      Cool, white sand
      Makes a cry
      When I walk along on it.

5th Place: Mr. Byoung-Song Chwe - Tuscaloosa, Alabama
      I feel so aged!
      This year I made
      Elaborate New Year cards.
