      A basket of bulbs.
      Winter sun spices the air
      From the window sill.

2nd Place: Amelia Heath - Northport, Alabama
      Hearts awake unaware.
      Tears return with memory.
      Yet, a new day dawns.

3rd Place: Barbara McClary - Calera, Alabama
      A formal handshake.
      Peace is the warriors' dream.
      Scent of jasmine wafts.

4th Place: Rose Marie Stutts - Tuscaloosa, Alabama
      These great hollow bells,
      From their emptiness, music
      Throughout the city.

Honorable Mention

David Kopaska-Merkel - Tuscaloosa, Alabama
      The doctor looks down.
      "Six months at most," he says.
      I order peach trees.

High School Category

      Fragile white snow flakes
      Gently drift from the dark sky
      Like tiny angels.

2nd Place: Britney Rupert - Lake View, Alabama
      Radiant sunrise
      Glistening through the tall trees.
      A new beginning.

3rd Place: Cathie Strickland - Pinson, Alabama
      A single flower,
      Sprouting in a battlefield,
      Proves that life goes on.

4th Place: Amy Price - Vance, Alabama
      Hope is like pollen,
      That sticks to bees' furry legs,
      Waiting to be dropped.

      Through the morning's mist
      Rising colors paint the sky.
      A new day begins.

2nd Place: Laura Andreades - Montgomery, Alabama

      Hope is a sunset.
      You look and see the glory
      Of another world.

3rd Place: Will Hester - Montgomery, Alabama

      The World Trade Center:
      Here, a flower is blooming
      Out of the rubble.

4th Place: Elyse Evans - Montgomery, Alabama

      The sun has come out.
      The puppies open their eyes.
      A great day we pray.

      People run away
      Yet, the sun went down that day
      And kept rising, too.

      The little children
      Are waiting for rain so they
      Can jump in the mud.

      Peace on Earth will come.
      Peace is what we need the most.
      The dove might fly soon.

Adult Category

      Winter sparrows
      Gather around the food
      My grandchild scattered on the ground.

2nd Place: Hiroshi Yamaguchi - Narashino, Japan
      The flames of war were gone.
      Children are now learning how to write
      Under the cold winter sky.

3rd Place: Daiji Naito - Osaka, Japan
      New Year morning,
      I wish I could forget
      Everything bad about last year.

Elementary School Category
(Grades 4-6)

1st Place: Kasumi Muto - Narashino, Japan
      The New Year visit to the shrine.
      On the horse's back, this year's animal of hope,
      I wish I could gallop off.

2nd Place: Yui Miyanaga - Narashino, Japan
      First graders walk through dancing cherry flowers
      With satchels
      On their small backs.
