Mechanism review and tutorialsI am working to develop some resources to help you review important mechanisms from this class. There will be two types of resources: reviews, which go through each mechanism step by step with comments; and tutorials, in which you will work through the mechanism by answering multiple choice questions. I hope that you find these helpful in understanding the mechansims we cover. Practice synthesis problemsSince the book has very few practice problems for multi-step synthesis, I have included a few problems for each chapter. To best take advantage of these problems, study the reactions in the chapter until you feel confident with them and then try the synthesis problems. If you can't figure them out right away, look in your book for help with particular transformations. I think they'll be most useful if you make a serious effort to complete each problem before looking at the answer. Practice examsExams from last year are available to help you study. The exams should correlate fairly closely with this years class, but there may be some differences. Campus ResourcesThe Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) has availiable the companion CD to the Solomon text. The CTL has paid for two copies of the CD. The CD's are kept at the CTL computer lab (124 Osband) front desk. Ask for the Organic Chemistry CD. The CTL also offers tutors in chemistry. A list of chemistry graduate that are available for hire as tutors is available on the Chemistry Department web site. Web-based Study AidsThere are some excellent resources on the Web which allow you to practice extra problems or read up on problem areas. I highly recommend that you take advantage of these, particularly the practice problems. The only way in my opinion to understand organic chemistry is to work a lot of problems, besides some of these sites are really cool. One note of caution: Often tutorial sites will cover reactions that we have not talked about. Don't get stressed out about this. If I have not talked about a reaction in class, then you don't need to know it. Official Solomons Companion Website
