GREECE AND THE SEA

Greece is surrounded

by water on all sides. In

fact, in ancient times the

entire Mediterranean Sea

was like one giant pond,

linking many diverse

cultures through trade.

Shipping was and is an

important part of the

Greek livelihood. Note

the anchor on the reverse

of the Greek coin at the

bottom left.

Early on, Greece civiliza-

tion flourished most in

the southern peninsula,

called “Peloponnesus”. It

was connected to the rest

of Greece by a narrow strip

of land called the “Isthmus”

of Corinth.

The Greeks also occupied

Crete from about 1500 B.C.

onward. They absorbed

many elements from the

Minoan civilization there.
