Tantalus
Tantalus in the underworld. According to this version his punishment was to hold a rock, which hangs above his head, threatening to crush him, and so torturing him for eternity. [krater, 4th century BC]
This relief from a
Roman sarcophagus
shows Tantalus (far
right), Ixion (center),
and Sisyphus all
suffering their fates
in the underworld.
