Lapiths and Centuars
Theseus and the Lapiths. Theseus punches a centaur in the face, who tries to attack back by crashing a vase on his head. As he rushes, he tramples over a girl of the Lapiths, who has fallen. Another centaur flees, while Perithous, to the left, has another centaur in a headlock, who holds a table to attack with. The artist is obviously influenced by the huge compositions of the same scene from the temple of Zeus at Olympia, and the south side of the Parthenon. This was typical of 5th century art, to represent scenes from famous reliefs on temples. [krater 475 B.C., Florence Museo Archeologico]
