PANDORA
As seen from Sophocles' play, Pandora, or "The Forgers", the forgers with their hammers either shape out Pandora or bring her out from the earth using their hammers. Here the second version is probably depicted. Epimetheus helps Pandora spring from the earth. Hermes is sent by Zeus to bring her a flower; Zeus stands on the left side. A small cupid flies toward Epimetheus, holding a ribbon and signifying the wedding between the two. [red figured krater, c. 450 B.C., Oxford Ashmolean Museum]
