POTNIA THERON
Artemis is presented sometimes as wild, sometimes as tender. Here she is represented with a leafy crown in her hair, jewelry, with a fawn skin above her mantle, with her quiver on her back. She holds a phiale in her left hand, and with her right she reaches out to a swan. The Greeks fittingly called her “Potnia Theron,” that is, “The Mistress of Wild Animals.” [white lekythos, c. 490 B.C., Leningrad Ermitage]
