CERES AND ANNONA
Bronze Sestertius of Nero, Lugdunum mint, 64-66 B.C. The Obverse depicts the head of Nero, laureate, with small globe at the point of the neck. The legend reads IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX TR POT P P. The reverse has Ceres sitting on the right, veiled, draped, holding corn ears and a torch, with her feet on a stool, facing Annona, draped, standing and resting on her hip, while holding a cornucopia; between them is a modius (a measure of wheat in the form of an inverted bucket) on a garlanded altar; behind, ship's stern. Reverse legend: ANNONA AVGVSTI CERES | S C. Annona is the personification of the annual grain supply of Rome.
