CERTIFICATION IN LATIN

STATE OF ALABAMA

(2000 CATALOGUE REQUIREMENTS)



Students wishing to earn certification to teach Latin in the public schools must take certain Classics and Education courses. We recommend that you major in Classics rather than education. In the long run, this offers you more options. Always clear your intended program with advisors in education before you begin taking classes.







CLASSICS COURSES

Students must earn a minimum of 33 credit hours in Latin, Greek, and Classics courses. The following courses are required (Greek is not required, but is recommended):

bulletLatin 101 and 102
bulletLatin 201 and 202
bulletLatin 301 and 302
bulletLatin 490
bulletCL 386 (Roman History)
bulletThree more courses with CL or GR designations, of which at least six hours must be 300+

Note: A student can complete six hours of CL 380 by participating in the Alabama in Greece program. See the Classics advisor for details.



EDUCATION COURSES

The following courses must be completed as a prerequisite to admission to the Teacher Education Program:

These courses must be completed in the student's junior year:

bulletBER 450 (Assess. Prac. in Classroom Lang.)
bulletHD 301 (Child Development: School Age)
bulletCEE 320 (Survey of Elementary Education)
bulletCEE 365 (Literature for Children)

These courses must be completed as a block the semester prior to the internship:

bulletCIE 489 (Clin. Exp. in Schools)
bulletCRD 412 (Improv. Reading in Sec. Sch. [W])
bulletCSE 493 (Diversity Block Seminar)

Internship to be completed the final semester (9 hrs.):
