Hypatia Chapter of Mortar Board

The University of Alabama

Dear Student:

The purpose of Mortar Board, an honor society for seniors, is to support the ideals of the University of Alabama, to advance a spirit of scholarship, to recognize and encourage leadership, and to provide the opportunity for a meaningful exchange of ideas as individuals and as a group. Membership in this society is open to both men and women and is considered one of the greatest honors an undergraduate can achieve.

The Hypatia Chapter of Mortar Board is now preparing for the selection of members for the 1999-2000 academic year and invites you to submit an information sheet. You may either submit your information sheet online or download the sheet as a Word 97 document. If you choose to make use of the Word document, your printed form should be placed in the Application Drop Off Box on the main floor of the Ferguson Center by Friday, January 29, no later than 4:45 p.m. The tapping ceremony will be held on the Mound on the Quadrangle on Honors Day, Friday, April 16. Please be present on this day to find out if you have been selected for this most prestigious honor.

Mortar Board strives to select a group that reflects the wealth of talents and diversity of our student population, and we normally receive over 250 information sheets each spring for consideration. In order to insure a fair and objective selection process, we prepare candidate packets for each member to use during selections. For this reason, we request that you attach to your information sheet a check for $3 payable to Mortar Board to help cover the photocopying expenses incurred in this lengthy process. If you choose to apply online, you will need to place a check in a sealed envelope with "Mortar Board" and your name written on it in the Application Drop Off Box. If for some reason this $3 contribution imposes a particular financial burden upon you, please do not hesitate to contact our faculty advisor, Elaine Globetti, at 348-8237 for a waiver. In no way will a failure to submit a contribution affect the selection committee on one's candidacy.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at 562-8271 or bradb002@bama.ua.edu. If you have questions regarding the online submission process, contact Shane Underwood at sunderw1@bcc.cba.ua.edu. Congratulations on your achievements thus far and thank you for your interest in Mortar Board.

Sincerely,

Anna Bradbary, Vice-President
