Ramadan "Fast-A-Thon" Dinner 2005
The Muslim Students' Association organized a Fast-A-Thon dinner free of
charge on October 31st at the Bryant Conference Center for the UA students,
faculty and staff. The goal was to raise awareness about the month of Ramadan,
when Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, and about the millions of people who
are suffering from hunger in the world.
A special emphasis was put on efforts and ideas to relieve hunger in West
Alabama. For this purpose, and at the said event, the MSA awarded two $250
scholarships to two UA students from among those who submitted essays
about practical ideas on how to lessen the hardship of the poor and hungry in
West Alabama. During the event, canned and monetary donations where
collected and given to the West Alabama Food Bank.
The event was very successful and all of our goals were reached, i.e.
promoting friendship among the UA community from all different cultural
backgrounds, supporting the less fortunate in Tuscaloosa and West Alabama,
and creating a better understanding of Muslims' religious practices.
