Courses Taught:

General Ecology                             Stream Ecology                            Aquatic Insects

Research Interests:

Organic matter dynamics in streams and wetlands- For the past 6 years Ward has been examining the hydrological import and export of particulate and dissolved organic matter from a wetland ecosystem, the Talladega Wetland Ecosystem in west-central Alabama.  In addition, Ward's research interests have included studies of the patterns of decomposition of coarse and fine particulate litter inputs to streams and wetlands.  Ward has a Ph. D. student who is recently completed an organic matter budget for the main tributary to the Talladega Wetland .

Aquatic invertebrate ecology in streams and wetlands- Ward's long-standing research interests have been in aquatic invertebrate ecology.  These studies have been directed primarily toward life history and feeding relationships and has included studies of invertebrates which consume leaf litter, those that burrow and live in soft sediments, those that graze rock surfaces in streams as well as herbivorous beetles feeding on water lily leaves.

Surface water hydrology - For the past 8 years Ward has been measuring components necessary to construct a hydrologic budget for the Talladega Wetland Ecosystem.  Two studies from this work have been published.  Together with Dr. Indrajeet Chaubey, a manuscript has been submitted that describes inflow, precipitation, outflow, E-T, and groundwater exchange for the Talladega Wetland Ecosystem.  The next phase will involve a) a more detailed description of evapotranspiration; b) construction of a model for the basin to predict hydrologic transport of particulate and dissolved carbon components; c) and a comparison of hydrologic patterns before and after loss of the major water storage basin in the wetland.
