Kevin weighed 2800 grams at birth. His mother, Sue, has breast fed him for two months, but now she is ready to go back to work and wants to bottle feed him. She has come to you for advice.
- Sue feels somewhat guilty about bottle feeding Kevin because she believes that breast milk is better for him. How would you respond to her concerns?
- Sue is unsure about the transition between breast and bottle feeding. How should she make this change?
- Sue is not sure if she should choose ready-to-use formula, concentrated formula, or powdered formula. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type?
- What advice can you give Sue about bottle and formula preparation?
- Kevin weighs 9 pounds and is 22 inches in length. Using the NCHS growth charts, what percentile is he at weight and length?
- Approximately how much formula would you expect Kevin to consume in a day? Should Sue be concerned if your estimate is incorrect? Why or why not?
- Under normal environmental conditions how much water should Kevin consume each day?
- Sue is concerned about the introduction of sold food into Kevin’s diet. Explain to her when and how to introduce solid foods and juices to Kevin.
- Plan a one-day menu for Kevin when he reaches 1 year of age.
- Sue’s mother has told her that when Kevin begins taking a bottle, it will be easier for him to go to sleep because she can put him to bed and prop up his bottle. Is this good advice? Why or why not?
