Philanthropy

Alabama Beta's represent Pi Beta Phi, not only through our contributions to the fraternity's national philanthropies, but also here in the Tuscaloosa community that we call home during our four years at the Capstone. Here are some of those organizations that we help to support through donations, time and fun activities!

Links to Literacy is Pi Beta Phi's national service project in which all Pi Phi chapters and alumnae clubs can participate. Chapters can assist local agencies or schools with book distribution or one-on-one interaction with pupils who need extra attention as they learn to read. Links to Literacy Week is scheduled annually.  Locally, Alabama Betas tutor at Holt Elementary School.  We also read to the blind over closed circuit radio at Reese Phifer Hall in the Pi Beta Phi reading room.

Arrowmont Settlement School is the main philanthropic project located in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. It began as a settlement school for children of mountain people in the Appalachian region. Arrowmont is an educational facility created & supported by Pi Phi's. Today, the complex houses studios for metal, enameling, textile design & photography as well as studios for painting, drawing, papermaking, book arts, basketry, spinning, quilting, & stained glass. This is a popular place for Pi Phi's of all ages & from all over to visit. Pi Beta Phi is the only sorority that owns its own philanthropy project.

Donations from members to the Arrow in the Arctic Fund have provided support for the many branches of the library systems in the Yukon & Northwest Territories.

EMMA HARPER TURNER FUND
The Emma Harper Turner Memorial Fund is a special endowment which makes gifts to assist Pi Beta Phi alumnae in tragic circumstances or in times of hardship. These gifts are never given as charity but as an act of love. This is truly the definition of sisterhood.
